Summer Events (and Weather!) to Savor

I hope you are enjoying our break from the extreme heat, fellow Hawleyites. It was cool enough last night for me to pull up my quilt—and for Cocoa the dog and Rhubarb the cat to snuggle with me all night long. And this morning I baked a pie … something I have been putting off. Yet it’s still warm enough this afternoon so I can plan to go swimming. In other words, this is perfect summer weather in Hawley. I hope you take full advantage of it … and of the wonderful seasonal vegetables and fruits that are appearing at local farms.

Goodbye for Now, Charlemont Forum

Congratulations to the Charlemont Forum for finishing another successful season. I attended last night’s session via Zoom (never a perfect experience, but better than nothing).

The Forum may have ended, but plenty of events still remain for us to savor.

A Final Concert

This Saturday, July 20, at 5 p.m., Mohawk Trail Concerts will present its final concert for this season at the Charlemont Federated Church. Soprano Maria Ferrante will join violinist Masako Yanagita and pianist Jerry Noble for a program that will include works by Ravel, the Russian composer Ippolitov-Ivanov, and two other French composers. The concert will be followed by a pie sale that will raise money for MTC’s home and partner, the Charlemont Federated Church. (The refreshing key-lime pie I just popped into the freezer will be among the offerings.)

Maybe Not So Final

MTC’s official season may be about to end, but its music at the Federated Church will continue. On Saturday, July 27, at 5 p.m. Jerry Noble and I will perform a program that will honor the 80th anniversary this year of the pairing of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Donations at the door will help Mohawk Trail Concerts. And on Sunday, September 1, at 3 p.m., Mohawk Trail Concerts will present “Remembering Alice: A Concert in Celebration of Alice Parker.” More on that soon!

R.S.V.P. for the Senior Barbecue

Seniors, remember you are invited to a barbecue this coming Wednesday, July 24, starting at 11 a.m. at the Charlemont Fairgrounds. This event is sponsored by the Hawley Council on Aging. If you plan to come, call or text chair Jenn Rich at 413-475-2585 and let her know how many of you will be there.

Dates to Note

And mark your calendars with the following dates:

On Saturday, August 3, at 3 p.m. our Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its 40th anniversary. I don’t have any details yet about this, but I hope to soon.

Sunday, August 11, is Hawley Day, the annual reunion of the Sons & Daughters of Hawley. I’ll have more information on the day in an upcoming newsletter.

On Wednesday, August 14, pre-registration will open for Household Hazardous Waste Collection. The collection itself will take place on Saturday, September 21. Pre-registration ends on September 13.
