Mobile Health Van Plus
The Health Van Returns
In cooperation with Mohawk Trail Regional High School and the Mary Lyon Foundation, the Community Health Center of Franklin County sending its Mobile Health Van back to our area.
This month the van will be at the Cowell Gymnasium in Shelburne Falls on Wednesday, December 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will return to Mohawk Trail Regional School on most days of the following week, December 15 to 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (See poster above.)
People wishing to make appointments or get more information may also consult the CHFC website.
The CHFC participates in many commercial insurance plans, including Medicare, Commonwealth Care, and Mass Health. It also offers a sliding scale for those who find themselves without insurance.
Office Hours
At this busy time of year, our office hours may be a little erratic … but we still want to help you! My (Tinky’s) office hours for this week will be on Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and next week I’ll be back on Tuesday but a little earlier than usual, again from 11 to 3.
Our tax collector, Betty Nichols, is available only by appointment for the next few weeks.
To arrange to see either Betty or me, feel free to leave a message at the office (413-339-5518, info@townofhawley.com) or to call me at home at 413-339-4747.
Lithium Ion Batteries
The Solid Waste District has asked us to share this information about the possible danger from damaged rechargeable lithium-ion batteries:
If you have a swollen or damaged lithium-ion (li-ion) battery, it is a serious fire risk. Place it in a sealable plastic bag. If you have cat litter or spill absorbent, add that to the bag to cover the battery. Place the sealed bag in a plastic pail with additional cat litter/absorbent. Bring it to the transfer station and let the attendant know you have a damaged li-ion battery. Or call the solid waste district office at 413-772-2438 and make an appointment to bring it to the office at 117 Main Street in Greenfield.
Take Care of Yourselves
As we approach the shortest, darkest day of the year, we encourage Hawleyites to take care of themselves and each other. As you may know, several of our older townspeople have died lately, including our long-time constable, George Rice.
Please reach out to neighbors who have health issues, and please ask for help if you need it. Tonight is supposed to be extremely cold. Make sure you warm your house as well as you can, and go out as little as you can this evening.
The light WILL return!
Hawlemont News
Of course, the Hobby Horse Bazaar returns this Saturday, December 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.!
Play Group for children up to age six with families will take place on December 6 and 20 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. n the Hawlemont Gym, staffed by the CFCE (Coordinated Family & Community Engagement branch of the Massachusetts Department of Education).
In conjunction with the Mary Lyon Foundation and Good Neighbors, Hawlemont is offering a backpack food program once a week to hungry Charlemont and Hawley residents in need (not just students and families of students; contact the school office at 339-8316 for more information).
Fun facts:
1. Last year’s Hawlemont Fifth Graders scored higher than the state average on the Science MCAS.
2. Rosie, the school’s pig, had 8 piglets who are growing and thriving.
3. The school successfully raised funds (with help from the town of Charlemont) to purchase and install brand new play structures for students to use during recess and for the entire community after school hours.
And Don’t Forget These Events
I have already written about these activities, but I thought I’d throw in a little reminder. We need our holiday cheer!
That’s it for this week. Stay warm tonight!
