Internet Semi-Update, Chimney Cleaning, and Much More
Dear Hawley Friends and Neighbors:
I thought summer was busy, but fall seems to be matching it! I have lots to report.
The Internet Situation
Nothing has been resolved with GONETSPEED, but thanks to all your complaints the company and the Massachusetts Broadband Institute are both aware of the problem and are trying to devise a solution.
In the meantime, Hawley resident Greg Rowehl (who estimates that he has spent 40 to 50 hours talking to various authorities about our internet woes!) notes that GONETSPEED is not billing him for service until the problems are fixed. He suggests that other residents with poor internet call and request similar treatment.
Chimney Cleaning
Hawley’s firefighters offer a chimney-cleaning service each fall to residents. If you’d like to be put on the list for chimney cleaning, call emergency-management director Brandon Root at home (413-339-5592) to give him your name, address, and phone number. If no one is home, feel free to leave a message.
Please note that the cleaning is done at the convenience of the Fire Department, usually on a weekend. It is a free service, but a donation to the Hawley Firefighters Association will be much appreciated.
Old Town Common Ghost Town TourFor the second year in a row, the Sons & Daughters of Hawley and Christian Drake are offering a twilight, lantern-lit tour of Hawley’s Old Town Common (adjacent to the Hawley Bog on East Hawley Road). The tour will take place next Saturday, October 5, beginning at 5:15, with Sunday the 6th as a rain date. Those attending are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing.
Space and lanterns are limited so if you would like to attend, please email Suzy Groden at suzyqgroden@gmail.com.
Bulky Waste Day
Our waste district is offering a Bulky Waste Day on Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. The nearest site for disposal to us is Mohawk Trail Regional School on Route 112 in Buckland. No pre-registration is required, but cash fees will apply. For more details, visit this web page or read this flyer.
COVID Tests
We still have plenty of COVID tests at the Town Office (come in on Tuesday afternoons to pick one up!), but if you’d like to receive a couple at home, you’ll be happy to learn that the Federal Government is once again offering them to households at https://covidtests.gov/. Let’s try to get through the next few months in good health….
That’s it for this week. I have received several offers of help for our Halloween Party (details will be announced soon), but we can always use more help. I’m also trying to generate a list of children in town so if you have children, PLEASE let me know who they are so they can be invited!
Warmly,
Tinky Weisblat
