Hawley News: Memorial Day Edition

Thanks to our volunteer gardeners, Leslie Cooper and Rainey McCarthy, for keeping our flower pots festive and appropriate throughout the year!

Today is Memorial Day, a time to remember those who have died in our nation’s armed forces. It is also the semi-official first day of the summer season. So get ready for nicer weather; the sun is definitely supposed to shine tomorrow!

We have a couple of events coming up next week. First, two announcements:

The Tax Collector Hours This Week

Tax collector Betty Nichols will be in the office on Wednesday, May 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. instead of on Tuesday. She will return to her regular Tuesday hours next week.

An Announcement from the Hawley Volunteer Fire Department!

The HVFD is pleased to announce that its members are able to provide File of Life forms to town residents.

A File of Life is attached magnetically to your refrigerator and contains all pertinent medical history, medication lists, and other important health information.

HVFD First Responders and EMS Personnel may need this information to treat you during an emergency. Sometimes patients are unable to answer questions so the File of Life can be used to help treat the patient.

To obtain a File of Life, call the department at 413-339-4267. Or let me (Tinky) know by phone or email, and I’ll pass along your information.

These lifesaving forms are free and really do help in an emergency. Thanks to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office TRIAD Division; the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office; Northwestern District Attorney’s Office; and the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office for helping the department provide this service.

Update Your Phone Number!

Over the past few years, many residents in town have changed over from landlines to cellular phones. Unfortunately, this means these people are no longer in the telephone book … and may not be reachable in an emergency.

Please make sure the Town Office (and therefore emergency services) has your up-to-date telephone number. We will never give it away, and we will not use it unless we have to. Just call or email me (Tinky) using the information below to make sure our EMS folks can reach you.

Now, a couple of events….

Return of the Charlemont Forum

On Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. at Mohawk Trail Regional School in Buckland, join the Charlemont Forum, “Voices and Votes,” and Professor Austin Sarat for a discussion of the current state of the constitution. Thanks to Falls Cable TV, this event may be viewed online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsYQbITMs1I.

Learning About Google Docs

Earlier that same day, you may learn about the increasingly prevalent Google Docs in a free class at the library.

I’ll be back next week with many more events, including my own upcoming concert. Meanwhile, enjoy the sunshine to come. I wish you lots of cookouts and cocktail parties as the summer gets going.

Warmly,

Tinky Weisblat
