Good Neighbor Day, a Board of Health Concern, and More
Come Meet Neighbors and Town Officials
This Sunday, September 28, beginning at 12:30 p.m. town officials and Hawleyites will gather at the Town Office (we hope outside, but inside if necessary) to speak briefly about town services, enjoy lunch, and chat informally. The Fire Department will be on hand to grill hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers, and several people have volunteered to bring salads, side dishes, or dessert. Feel free to add to the meal—we are particularly looking for someone to donate some cider–but if you just bring yourself, that’s just fine.
And if you have too much produce in your garden, bring it along! There is sure to be someone in need.
If you can’t join us on Sunday at this busy time of year, we hope you will spend a little extra time this weekend just being a good neighbor. Check in with someone who lives nearby or plan a get together in your immediate neighborhood.
A Letter from the Board of Health
Hawley’s Board of Health recently wrote this letter to express concern about unpermitted housing structures in town. Please read it and let us know if you have any concerns.
West Nile Virus
Our public-health nurses inform us that a mosquito in Erving recently tested positive for West Nile Virus. There have been no nearby cases, but having the virus in our county does cause some concern. The health service has issued these guidelines for mosquitos:
1. Be prepared: Repair screens, clean up to get rid of mosquito breeding sites, be aware of stagnant water on private property (e.g. unused swimming pools), and consult the local board of health.
2. Wear long sleeves and long pants from dusk to dawn when weather permits.
3. Use mosquito netting on baby carriages and playpens.
4. Wear mosquito repellent when outdoors, especially between dusk and dawn.
5. Dump standing water twice weekly.
Another Crafting Session at the Library
That’s all I have for now. I hope to see some of you on Sunday.
