Gearing Up for Fall

Dear Hawley Neighbors and Friends:

Labor Day weekend is upon us! Let’s all savor every moment of summer. Meanwhile, there is a lot coming up.

Election News

Don’t forget the State Primary Election on Tuesday, September 3, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. And if you are still sitting on an absentee ballot, please pop that thing in the mail.

Speaking of elections, Town Clerk Donna Lemoine is looking for poll workers for the general election on Tuesday, November 5. If you aren’t free during the day, consider volunteering to count votes during the evening. We are toying with establishing a third election shift to cover that critical time. Working at the polls is fun: since we seldom have long lines, most of the time is spent visiting with other Hawleyites. Poll workers are paid. If you think you might be interested, email Donna at townclerk@townofhawley.com, or leave a message for her at the Town Office at (413) 339-4747.

Harvest Supper

Come celebrate harvest season and learn about old growth forests at the Sons & Daughters of Hawley’s annual Harvest Supper and Nature Program on Sunday, September 8, at Stump Sprouts beginning at 5 p.m. Please note that this year participants are being asked to contribute to the meal. Space is limited so reservations are required. See the flyer below for more details.

A Senior Event

Our Council on Aging is planning to feed seniors AND inform them on Wednesday, September 11, at its “Pancakes and Probate” session. See the flyer below.

Later in the Month: Quick Pickling

Pickling season is in full force, and the library is hosting an event to show us all how very easy pickles can be.

Mosquito Information

Many of us have seen news items about mosquito-born illnesses being spread in Massachusetts. Most of the cases are east of here—but being vigilant never hurts. Mosquitos with West Nile Virus have made it as far west as Greenfield. The photo below gives you some hints for staying safe and avoiding mosquito bites.

Reminders

As I noted last time, I will NOT be in the office the next two Tuesdays. Instead, I will hold office hours on Monday, September 2, and Monday, September 9, from noon to 4 p.m. I’m also available by appointment; call me at home (413-339-4747, not too early in the morning) to get in touch.

And … all are invited to the musical celebration of Hawley’s late resident composer, Alice Parker Pyle, this Sunday, September 1, at 3 p.m. at the Charlemont Federated Church. If you’d like a little preview, check out this recent edition of NEPM’s radio show, The Fabulous 413. At about minute 24, our two sopranos for that afternoon, Alice’s daughter Molly Pyle Stejskal and yours truly, are interviewed about Alice and the concert. Come early! The church is sure to be crowded.

That’s it for now. Have a wonderful holiday weekend….
