Events, a Deadline, and More
Dear Hawleyites and Friends:
Happy almost Labor Day! If you’re like me, you’re noticing a little chill in the air (especially on cloudy days like today) and even a few turning leaves in the landscape. We are still in summer, however, and I for one plan to take advantage of any warm weather left to me. Here are some updates from our town.
Please Ignore Today’s Earlier Message
I have NO IDEA why our e-mail service sent out an announcement saying that I was under the weather and wouldn’t be in the office tomorrow. I am fine; the message was supposed to go out weeks ago. Sometimes our mail service, Mail Poet, is hard to figure out. Anyway, thanks to those of you who sent “get well” wishes!
A Harvest Supper
A week from Sunday, September 13, is the date for this year’s Harvest Supper and Nature Program, hosted by the Crawfords at Stump Sprouts and organized by the Sons & Daughters of Hawley. The speaker this year will be John Wheeler, a mycologist (a mushroom specialist) from the Berkshire Mycological Society.
Guests are asked to bring a dish or beverage to share if they can and to register in advance by getting in touch with Liz Sears at lizgsears@gmail.com or 413-337-5321 to say how many people will be coming and what dish they plan to bring.
Since this is a celebration of this year’s harvest locally grown edible contributions are ideal. The event begins at 4:30 p.m.
Mark Your Calendars!
On Wednesday, September 16, at 7 p.m., the Town will hold a listening and discussion session about the possibility of instituting a local tax on short-term rentals. The Selectmen are considering such a tax but wish to inform, and get opinions from, townspeople before they go any further.
Household Hazardous Waste Registration Deadline
A reminder: Next Wednesday, September 9, is the deadline for registering for the annual hazardous waste collection on Saturday, September 19. For more details, click here.
School News
Both the Hawlemont and Mohawk Trail Schools have started for the year, although Hawlemont’s pre-kindergarten classes do not begin until next Tuesday, September 8. The tech schools started last week. Happy back-to-school to kids and their parents!
Hawlemont will hold an open house on Wednesday, September 23, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. This event includes a building tour, an introduction to staff, information about clubs and activities, and dinner. The school will organize an all-school hike on Wednesday, September 30. The public is invited to these events, although those wishing to join in the hike must let the school know and fill out paperwork for a simple CORI check a week in advance. For more information about these activities, call the school office at 413-339-8316.
Upcoming Dementia and Caregiver Sessions
LifePath encourages people to register for these events!
Thank You!
Congratulations and thanks to the workers who maintained their good humor throughout Tuesday’s long but fortunately never strident primary election … and above all to our indefatigable Town Clerk, Ellie Van Iderstine, who was calm and efficient for more hours than I was awake.
That’s it for this week. I hope not too many of you have to labor on Labor Day…..
Warmly,
Tinky Weisblat
