August Heat, Hawley Day, and Civil Resistance

Heat

According to the Massachusetts Department of Health, we are due for another warm spell beginning this weekend. We pretty much know the drill by now, but don’t forget to hydrate, stay out of the sun, and go swimming if you can. If your house is sweltering, and you need to cool down for a bit, call me (Tinky) at home (413-339-4747), and I can let you into the Town Office for a while. The mini-splits there keep things pleasantly cool.

Hawley Day

Our town’s annual reunion will take place this Sunday, August 10, in and around the Hawley Meeting House and the Hawley Grove (opposite each other way up East Hawley Road). All are welcome.

The day begins with a Kaffee Klatsch at 10-ish. At 11 we’ll go inside the Meeting House for a meeting and time of remembrance for those who died during the past year; this will include a brief talk by John Sears about Joseph Hawley, the Northampton native after whom our town was named. After this, the board of the Sons & Daughters will provide a light lunch in and around the Grove building while Small Change plays some tunes for us. A fun, easygoing day and a good time to see neighbors.

How to Stop a Power Grab

This Thursday, August 7, at 7 p.m. scholar Erica Chenoweth will speak at the Federated Church on Route 2 in Charlemont. Erica, who teaches at Harvard but spends a lot of time at her home in East Charlemont, will share lessons in civil resistance from history. The program is free and sponsored by the West County Climate Circle and Heath Affinity Group.

Home Grown-Hawley

Our idea of having neighbors share produce with each other at the Town Office hasn’t really taken off, and we may just give up on it. If you have spare produce to share, however, please let me (Tinky) know at 413-339-5518 or info@townofhawley.com. If you’re up for bringing it to the Town Office, I’m up for spreading the word that it has arrived!

That’s all I have for this week. Next week I’ll have information from our public-health nurses, Meg Ryan and Lisa White, about ticks and insect-born diseases. (They didn’t end up coming last week and have been rescheduled.)  Enjoy these still long summer days…..

Warmly,

Tinky Weisblat
