A Busy June

As we barrel toward the Summer Solstice and watch the thermometer careen all over the place, I hope you’re enjoying the longer days and the gorgeous green countryside. We can’t control everything, but we can allow ourselves a little time to appreciate the place and the people around us.

Lots of events are coming up in the next couple of weeks! Some of them I have mentioned before; others are new. But first:

A Few Warm Weather Tips

You may have noticed that if it’s not cold around here these days, it’s usual hot. Here are a few ideas for handling the heat:

  • drink water
  • limit alcohol
  • avoid heavy activity in the heat
  • take breaks in the shade or air conditioning
  • keep food cold and throw it out if it was left in the heat for too long
  • check on people at higher risk and share the resources below to help communities stay safe.

Here are a few more ideas from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

What I Did for Love: Tomorrow

eI know not everyone is free at 10:30 in the morning, but if you are, please join the Charlemont-Hawley seniors for my free concert of love songs tomorrow!

First Ever West County Fix-It Day this Saturday

This event is organized by the Franklin County Solid Waste District and by volunteers from local towns (including our town Lloyd Crawford). It is a follow up to the recent county-wide fix-it day at the Tech School, which was covered enthusiastically by WAMC. Here is a link to that story.

This is a great opportunity to re-use broken lamps, dull knives, and other sad household items.

Mohawk Trail Concerts Kick-Off: This Saturday

This Saturday, June 13, MTC begins its 56th season with a performance by the Adaskin String Trio with pianist Sally Pinkas. The program will include Beethoven, Brahms, and Joseph Marcello’s “Elegy for Miles Davis.” Concerts will continue every Saturday at 5 p.m. through July 18. For a full listing, visit MTC’s website.

The concerts suggest a $25 donation, but audience members are welcome to donate what is most comfortable for them. No on will be turned away.

AI Workshop on June 18

Artificial intelligence is everywhere in the news. Is it a threat? Is it a convenience? How can you use it without feeling paranoid? This informal session at the library may help you.

Let’s Make a Fairy House: June 20

Join the library’s mistress of crafts (and much more), Mary Ann Adams, for another creative, family-friendly session.

Knotweed Symposium on June 25

Japanese knotweed seems to be growing everywhere these days, pushing out native flora and spreading with alarming speed. Join experts and concerned citizens for a discussion of what can be done about this invasive plant.

That’s all I have for now–but I have a feeling it’s more than enough!

Warmly,
