Sliding Toward December

Dear Hawleyites and Friends:

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and didn’t let little things like snow and power outages get in the way of giving thanks and feasting with loved ones.

Burning Information

In the light of recent precipitation, Hawley’s Fire Department has lifted the restriction on outdoor cooking and contained camp fires. Burning permits required for other types of burns will still not be issued for the time being.

Anyone having an outdoor cooking fire/camp fire must exercise appropriate precautions, including:

  1. Supervising the fire at all times.
  2. Not burning near leaves, grass, or other fuels that could take off into a larger fire.
  3. Having appropriate tools for extinguishing the fire (water, shovel, etc.) on hand.
  4. Totally extinguishing the fire after use.

Residents with indoor wood stoves may run them as they normally would, but should NOT dump ashes near their houses or on grass or any other surface that could ignite. Wood ashes can contain viable embers for days.

A Thank You

Thank you as always to our Fire Department. Many of our firefighters’ Thanksgiving meals were deferred on Thursday as emergency personnel helped people with snow-related accidents.

One of the readers of this newsletter suggested it would be helpful to let people know where they can make donations to this group. Checks may be made out to the Hawley Firefighters’ Association and sent to:

Jane Grant, Treasurer
319 East Hawley Road
Hawley, MA 01339.

The Firefighters Association purchases needed supplies for our emergency personnel.

Town Clerk Update

On Tuesday, the Selectmen accepted the resignation of temporary Town Clerk Pamela Shrimpton and thanked her for stepping in to run the election. They went on to appoint Ellie Van Iderstine of Charlemont as our new interim Town Clerk. I hope I will soon have information about Ellie’s office hours. Meanwhile, welcome, Ellie!

Ornament Making

After its successful recent Thanksgiving crafting events, the Tyler Memorial Library is getting ready to make holiday ornaments. Join crafting maven Mary Ann Adams for the fun.

A Holiday Concert

Speaking of holiday events, my pianist Jerry Noble and I are planning our annual holiday offering two weeks from today. Join us for Christmas songs, Hanukkah songs, and winter songs—and a final sing-along set. The poster below has details. (The snow date for this concert is the following day; I hope we won’t need it!)

That’s it for now. See you soon!

Warmly,

Tinky Weisblat
